Without reading all that, I'd say the answer is pretty obvious.

If they had anything to do with the ODF OASIS thing, win or lose - it would
lend crendence to the format.  "If MS is on the committee, it must be
important!"

At this point in the game, though, the gloves are off.  ODF didn't just fade
away, it's actually gotten some press - so now they have to kill it.  And
the easiest way to do that is by killing it in the ISO committee, which
means they have to be on it.

Pretty simple, really.
