We actually did use the 7z compression for the Windows port one time. It
was a self-contained self-extractor, (so no one needed to have 7-Zip
installed). It saved about 20 MB of download. I'm not sure why we stopped
using it, other than Daniel and I haven't been making the extractor. I
thought the releases group was going to start using it - but I guess they
haven't been.

But I agree with Rich partly. 7z shouldn't be used for anything other than
Windows - because it's not maintained for anything other than Windows.

But saving 20 MB of download for Windows users (which is the majority of
OpenOffice.org users / downloaders) to me is reason enough to use it.

if this is a suggestion to use 7z for odf files, then that will probably
not happen in a near future (i hope :) )

that would break standard, break integration with a lot of systems, 7zip
is basically unmaintained for linux etc...

i'm sure there are other reasons as well :)
