It has been a couple of years since I saw either Gateway or Dell advertise them.

I've seen adds for FLOSS in all media --- radio and TV spots, newspapers, magazines, billboards, etc.

Most of them have been like the recent series distributed by Sun for OpenOffice.org. Paid for by a third party.

As far as the ODF format goes?  Go OO! It might not be a major win, but
you have to pick and choose your battles.

It means that Microsoft gets to once more, embrace, extend and ensure that the format is set back by at least a decade, if not two.

 That means that MS "officially" acknowledges OO.

At least two years ago Microsoft admitted that OOo was a potential threat.

The only question is what the rest of their strategy is.

is pretty official. My money is on OO in the long run.

I'd rather wait until after Microsoft v OOo user # 1.. 10,000 are over.
