Hello word count is only 2 clicks away (Tools>Word Count), but if you'd like to have it in the status bar, you can file an issue: go to http://www.openoffice.org > my pages > register for an account. Then you can fill in a form to make your status bar word counter an issue. Another issue might be that when you open an existing document, the tool count doesn't always work.
