If you are getting into desktop publishing, please do yourself a favor and
look at Quark or Adobe's InDesign. These are what the professionals use.
If you are looking for an open source option, Inkscape is closer to
Illustrator and is 'compatible' with OpenOffice.org or any non-MS
program, in part through use of SVG.

OpenOffice.org is getting more and more SVG support, and that will
eventually lead to better desktop publishing capabilities.
