If you have a brand new system you you might find it fast. I just did a comparison of time to open on my old Windows 98SE system.

M$ Word 97 - 8 seconds
WordPerfect 9 - 18 seconds
OOo Writer 2.1 - 74 seconds

You can't seriously compare MSWord 97 with OOo 2.1.
Unless you are Steve Ballmer of course ;-)

Furthermore, then you have also to start Excel, Powerpoint, Access, ...

But of course you are right, that running OOo on Win98 isn't the fastest experience. I just did a little test on a Win98 installation (500 mHz /124 MB or such). OOo 2.0.3 started in 21 seconds.
But it's not a heavily used (polluted) computer, I have to admit.
