I have some similar wishes. There are so many tasks that need more text
processing capabilities than we can offer in our text component in Draw,
Calc or Impress but OTOH also need some organizing and navigation
capabilities that Writer doesn't offer.

Writer has chapters, sections and bookmarks that can be used to organize
and navigate through text but the navigation isn't as easy and
comfortable as one would desire. An outliner would be great. :-)

OTOH I know only too well how much effort it would be do implement all
these nice things so I'm still hoping to find something that builds upon
existing components.

Can you describe the essence of the requirements behind your idea in a
few(!) sentences? You gave some examples, but what's the essential
requirement? Mine would be:

- have an easy and quick navigation to all the entries (e.g. the days of
the diary in your example)

- have all the text processing capabilities of Writer

- link to Calc sheets and their content

- optional: allow to restrict the view to a single entry

Using bookmarks or headings together with the navigator would be able to
fulfil the first two requirements, for the second we could use linked
objects and an extension that allows to access the data in the linked
content easily in the same way as our new Chart component uses data in
Calc to create charts. Writer could present such data in e.g. a new kind
of text field.

Ciao,
Mathias
