To Whom this May Concern:
Being this suite (i.e.: Open Office) Microsoft's Office's main
competitor, shouldn't its developers aim to the same main goals
they aim?
No! The aim is not to reproduce a copy of MS Office, but to make a
better office application!
In other words, as Office showed up in the market to solve every
office's main problems (thence, its name). Well,... in fact
Microsoft was very good at incorporating other peoples' solutions.
I did not realise MS Office solves an office's problems? Maybe I
should get a copy for my office? :D
Well, let's not waste more time in same moot arguments. What I
want to add is this: Microsoft is now aiming at providing the
ultimate managerial tools (yes, they are marketing geniuses),
i.e.: dashboards and scorecards.
They work with elements of Office (and other parts to be purchased
separately), would anyone tell me whether there may be equivalent
tools obtainable on the free market, i.e.: Open Office, open
source or otherwise?
This is the business intelligence tools that Microsoft are coming out
with now. There are equivalent tools within the open source community
including Pentaho and Jasper Intelligence. Both of these are Java
based and in theory could be integrated into OpenOffice.org in some
way, but I don't think this is the right way. Looking at messaging
and web services would be a much better way of integrating these
larger project capabilities (as well as others) into OpenOffice.org.
One little project that is worth looking at is Palo. It is looking at
building an OpenOffice.org interface for their product, so I
recommend people go and have a look at what they are doing.
