To whom it may concern:

I have some old Microsoft works files I want to take off of my backup CD, about
2 or 3 years old now. The only problem is, I think Works may be the only word
processor that I can't access the files to in Open Office. I'm not shitty,
just kinda bummed. I'm downloading the update right now, but if it's not in
there, maybe you could look into it?...If I could program, I'd do it myself.
libwps is a library made last year that allows OpenOffice.org, Abiword,
etc. to easily import Microsoft Works word processor documents (.wps)
with basic formatting. In the mainstream OpenOffice.org, libwps seems
to be stagnating waiting for legal approval. However, libwps is in
ooo-build, so NeoOffice and Ubuntu Feisty Fawn's OpenOffice.org already
include libwps.

Do they also have a filter for Writer working? I talked with Fridrich
some time ago and I understood him in the way that the filter is not
done yet. Did I get a false impression?

Mathias,

Fridrich wrote the integration with OpenOffice.org, and I have not tried that part. The libwps itself is done for *basic* formatting for most versions of MS Works: character formatting (font names, bold, italics, underline, font sizes), various character sets, and page breaks. Other features are not yet supported: paragraph formatting (which includes alignment), pictures, tables, hyperlinks, headers, and footers.

The status is on http://libwps.sourceforge.net which includes detailed status, the source code, special reference documents, and links to hundreds of sample documents.
