What a great product Open Office is - its Portable Apps version is my office

There's almost nothing in it which isn't as good as or better than Mr Gates'
offering and it works faster, takes up less memory, is far more intuitive, etc.

Impress is a good replacement for Powerpoint, although I have found that some
of the bullet styles don't import/export very accurately, but that's a quibble.

Now, if it would take on the challenge laid down in this web article (old but
still true):

http://www.jnd.org/dn.mss/in_defense_of_p.html

What would be a huge leap forward would be an application which would provide
the following:

1. for the audience: handouts showing the slide and the notes you want them to
see and the slide showing on a screen

and

2. for the presenter, the opportunity to see whatever combination of the slide
being shown, the handout notes given to the audience and their own speaking
notes, without it affecting the display which the audience sees.

This would be a big step to making Impress the presentation software of choice,
especially in formal settings, where it is very important to get every word
right and clearly distinguish between what you can say and what you can put in
writing for people to take away.

Unfortunately I don't have the programming skills to do this myself.

Hello Chris,

Impress, starting from version 2.0.4 is capable of handling multiple
screens so what you mention in your point 2 is actually already
possible. you can use the projector to show the slides in presentation
mode while your screen shows the presentation in edit mode.
Regarding the possibility of having two sets of notes (the public and
private ones) I was not aware that Power Point could do it. Personally
I do not see a big need for it, indeed I prefer when the presenter
looks at the audience while giving the presentation rather than
looking at what is projected (talking to the screen) or at his/her
laptop.
I guess you are correct in stating that the handouts management is not
the strongest suite of Impress, but the best way to improve it is to
raise a request for enhancement. If sufficient votes are received I am
sure that the developers will take a keen interest.
For example, the support of multiple screens had loads of votes and it
was eventually done.
At present the most popular complaint I read about impress are:
- support of a sound file throughout the presentation
- support for character style
but maybe there are many other people out there who would like to see
the enhancement you are proposing. So, please raise the issue.

Cheers,

Michele
