What a great product Open Office is - its Portable Apps version is my office
suite of preference at work, even though I should be using Microsoft Office.
There's almost nothing in it which isn't as good as or better than Mr Gates'
offering and it works faster, takes up less memory, is far more intuitive, etc.
Impress is a good replacement for Powerpoint, although I have found that some
of the bullet styles don't import/export very accurately, but that's a quibble.
Now, if it would take on the challenge laid down in this web article (old but
still true):
http://www.jnd.org/dn.mss/in_defense_of_p.html
What would be a huge leap forward would be an application which would provide
the following:
1. for the audience: handouts showing the slide and the notes you want them to
see and the slide showing on a screen
and
2. for the presenter, the opportunity to see whatever combination of the slide
being shown, the handout notes given to the audience and their own speaking
notes, without it affecting the display which the audience sees.
This would be a big step to making Impress the presentation software of choice, especially in formal settings, where it is very important to get every word right and clearly distinguish between what you can say and what you can put in writing for people to take away.
Unfortunately I don't have the programming skills to do this myself.
