Hi J.
Writer will not compress photos, as Word does. If you add that feature
you
will have a near-perfect word processor. I find it much better, already,
than
Word.
I prefer Writer to Word, too. I get to use Word regularly, but I'm not
familiar with it's image compression. What sort of compression are you
referring to? Jpeg compression?
OpenOffice.org saves the entire document into a compressed .zip archive,
so everything, including the photos are compressed so that they take up
less space on your hard drive. I'm not sure if that is the type of
compression you are hoping for.
I also wish that the columns feature didn't convert everything on the
screen
to columns. If only part of a manuscript could be marked (blocked), and
then
converted to columns, it would be an even more powerful word processor.
That is the function of "sections." Put your cursor where you would like
the columns to start, Insert / Section, define how many columns you want,
and part of your page will have columns.
I hope this helps you achieve your goals in OpenOffice.org.
Adrian
