On the one hand, I agree that OOo's interface is looking a bit dated.
But on the other hand, being a largely free project, the onus is on
motivated users to actually improve things.

The one big stumbling block seems to be the OOo uses its own custom
widget toolkit, instead of a more common toolkit such as gtk. So finding
people who can add some bling to the interface may be a bit difficult -
particularly since it has to work on Linux, OSX and Windows ( to name a
few ). Having said that, users can still easily collect icon sets and
submit them. There are currently 3 icons sets included in OOo, and this
is somewhat of an improvement.
