I use Samba between linux and windows machines all the time & seldom
have any problem doing so. Hint, you can browse your samba shares from
OOo to open a file by:

Tools|Options|OpenOffice.org|General|Open/Save dialogs| un-tick "Use
OpenOffice.org dialogs".

But yes, you'll need to have the shares mounted first - that's common on
any samba system.
