Hi, not sure if we are talking about the same type of file.  I am  thinking 
you might be referring too the main openoffice folder, not a file  from one of 
the modules.  I did try to zip it, expand, rename, (not in  that order) and 
did not have any luck, only the original "file" appears and  nothing else (no 
folder).  The file is a writer file -"open document  text" (like a word file) 
that locks up my computer.
 
I do have all startup programs off, except MSs programs.  I will  reboot and 
turn on everything and try to open, not sure if the soffin.bin  program is 
part of the problem.  Will try note pad and maybe word, not  sure if word will 
open it.

Just  rename the file to something.zip, unzip it and you'll find some xml
files.  These can be opened with an text editor, such as gEdit, Emacs, Vi or
