Hi,
It is unfortunate that Open Office still does not support ligatures
of simple scripts (English etc.) in ISO-8859-1 code space.
This is a touchy area for me. Good typesetting is an art. A properly
typeset page with using ligatures, ornaments, and with the letters in
each word properly kerned is a thing of beauty. I learned typesetting
using handset type. I learned to make ligatures and do kerning with a
file and thin spaces.
The problem of using ligatures is more complicated than simply
supporting their inclusion in a body of text. The spelling checker
needs to be modified so that it recognizes a word spelled with or
without the ligature code. When documents are exported the ability to
strip ligatures from copies of the documents that are going to people
whose software doesn't support ligatures also needs to be considered.
There are licensing issues what if the licensed font you use isn't
available at the recipients end?

Typefaces shouldn't be licensed to begin with!
