I can vouch for the fact that MS Word is not suitable for writing a longish book like the average novel. I started using it to write a short textbook on computers, and it was just plain unstable! I switched to OOo Writer and had much better results.
Robert's experience isn't unusual. There are fewer longish texts written so people who get good results with two pages expect to get the same results with 100 pages and they expect all the features to work just as reliably when pages are circulated around among contributors with different preference set ups which need to be coordinated if the process is to be robust.
MS is a poor choice as the target for what makes a good 'general purpose business suite'. It isn't simply a matter of adding features to OOo that will make it really excel. Somebody needs to define, in more concrete terms, what the target is for OOo.
