Some further comments:
- If ME really is not supported, the installation should not crash but
give a proper message saying that. Even Microsoft does that ...
Would be better, yes.
- Does OOo 3.0 really depend on functionality that is not in ME?
The problem is, that quite some work needs to be done to continue to be
able to run on 98/ME. At the same time the team had a very lot to do to
support Vista and Mac OS... The choice is obvious and a good one, IMO.
Otherwise I would suggest to allow OOo 3.0 to be installed on it even if
it is not formally supported. Bill Gates forces his customers to move to
newer operating systems by dropping support for application software,
but I thought that open source open office really is something
different. Are you going to force me to move to Vista, and beyond, after
some time?
There are some more alternatives out there. I think the idea is more
that only very few people really need the support on 98/ME any more. +
2.4.2 is still a very good program!
- Windows ME may be bad, but I run an application on it that is not
supported on XP (not even in compatibility mode). The application
probably contains a bug that is not detected on newer/better operating
systems. It is a very expensive application, so I can not afford a new
version.
- Perhaps I could change OOo source for ME compatibility and recompile
it. As OOo is open source, you can not prohibit me from doing that. Do
you want different OOo versions?
Of course you are free to do it yourself. If you really can (and team
members will be willing to give you the necessary pointers) it might
even be possible to include your work in the main stream version..
I suggest that you write to [EMAIL PROTECTED] (subscribe first) to get
explanation/support.
