Came this utterance fomulated by Tim to my mailbox:

Thunderbird with the Lightning extension will fit the bill. Free e-mail
program and calendar from Mozilla, the people that make the excellent
Firefox browser.

Slightly off from your question but i also recommend you get Firefox and
the Adblock Plus extension for it. Adblock Plus allows you to stop those
nasty ads on web pages, especially the bandwidth hungry flash ones.
