I have found a workaround for the problem though, so may as well mention
it. I created a new empty Writer document with the correct attributes. I
then used MS's tweakui (XP power tools; no idea if vista or 7 have such
a thing), which allows one to easily edit the template list for the
shell 'New' menu. Gave it my new file, and told it to overwrite the
existing entry. Job done, it appears, and the empty document could be
deleted.
I still have no idea of what could cause the observed behaviour though.
