Dear Christoph: I am an Oo user with a different techie background who sits here in my home office inn the West Island are of Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
Having recently subscribed to the Discuss forum, I have just read your recent message. Unfortunately I do not have either the time or financial resources to contribute significantly to Oo, although I do spread the word about it in the background and install it for as many of my local clients as I can encourage to u8se it. As Toastmaster (www.toastmasters.org ), I also use it in the preparation of my speeches. I have used Impress for a number of presentations with projectors, and I prepare a lot of stuff in the background integrating data from multiple sources, Oo draw being a frequent one. Unfortunately, my current financial situation is difficult enough that I cannot spend a lot of time on anything that does not produce short term income. However I have created some added custom colours for Oo, as well as some custom gradients, and a lot of Oo related templates for specialised situations as I build what I can in the background. I also use Oo in conjunction with several scanners, Gimp, Photoshop elements, and ABBYY sprint OCR. I also do a lot of spreadsheets in calc, some workbooks involving as many as 20 sheets. When there is time, I have a retired friend who holds a master's degree in IT, and he and I have "penguin fights" to try and get one of 2 legacy machines running Linux (typically Fedora) with Oo included. Once that is working we will try and repeat the effort on the 3rd hard drive on my main machine so it should eventually share common data with 2 Windows XP installations, all BIOS controlled. This way I will be able to eventually use Oo in Linux to produce content for paying Windows users, without those users necessarily having to be aware of the Linux origin ( or at least until they are well committed to the data product I am putting out.) And all this is polyglot: English, French, and some Spanish. Some Enhancements I would like to see (or at least know if there is any interest): 1) A set of 2D CAD tools added to Oo draw so users who are used to this type of environment can create this way in Oo Draw as well. (3D tools?) That I fear would be asking for pie in the sky!) 2) Better management of Oo draw objects after they have been pasted into Writer. In particular, Writer seems to allow one to edit a group object, but not to create a group object in Writer. 3) An add-on for Oo Base with the sort of perpetual calendar that would allow data entry and handling of multi-user schedules in a set of calendar view forms similar to the Lightning option for Thunderbird. This would be useful for businesses which are essentially human resource agents, in order to manage their scheduling. This should also include a means of identifying other worker fields, such as the workers' qualifications (medical example: Registered Nurse, Nurse's aide, General Practitioner, Gastroenterologist, Cardiologist, etc.) Categories to be created by the user as he creates the overall database. I wonder what the group thinks of all this?
