Looks as if you ask the council to reconsider the decision (...) to not change further on the product-independent odf icons.
Not exactly:

I ask the council to decide on the change itself: Is it reasonable to include such a fundamental change in an OOo release without involving the community in such a decision.

If the CC would not approve such a change, the modification could be reverted quite easily in one of the next releases on the way to OOo3.2.1.

After the decision process - on the relevant OOo lists, if necessary including a compromise or decision by the CC, the new icons (with or without application symbol) can be added to the next CWS to come, allowing to release OOo3.2.1 without Sun branding (the "S"-curve).
[...]

This decision has not been made in the community - none of the relevant projects nor the CC have been involved as far as I know.

OK, thanks for this extra information. To me that was not so clear and I didn't connect it tight enough to the community council task as you point to. Thanks for helping and correcting me.

About open questions: I wonder if you/others have links to threads / posts on project lists where there has been discussion about this aspect of the icons.
There has been a thread on d...@marketing [1] and I tried to summarize it's content on disc...@ux [2] where the main discussion on the ODF icons takes place.

Unfortunately this summary has not been taken into account by the people pushing these icons (at least they didn't reply on the list).

There have been several comments on this aspect of the icons (providing information or not about the application to open the files and thus reducing OOo branding on the user's desktop) in some of the other threads on disc...@ux concerning the ODF icons [3], [4], [5], but these threads are quite long, so reading them would take some time.

If you just look at the different names posting in these threads, you might see the variety of people interested in this document icon change (and you'll find more concerns than supporters).

Lutz created a wiki page for the ODF icons [6] that contains the first questions and comments on the icons along with some explanations, but our replies describing shortcomings of these explanations as well as the feedback from art [7] and marketing have neither been answered nor taken into account.

The only modification was to improve the contrast of the icons (especially the smaller ones) - the general decision to remove any OOo symbol has repeatedly been explained as following the priority goal of application independency. But if this goal has this priority for the OOo community has never been taken into account. In the opposite: we are told that this decision is not allowed to be discussed [8].

I already mentioned my compromise idea [thread: 9] for adding a small application symbol to the otherwise identical ODF icons [image: 10], so I hope these links provide an overview on the actions about the ODF icons.

Best regards

Bernhard
