REGARDING strategy selection and maintenance

Dear PPIGers

I am attempting to find out references to research relating to strategy
selection and problem solving. I have found some information which relates to
strategy selection and metacognition, and relationships between cognitive
abilities and strategy selection but my research interests lie with problem
solving and programming and the varieties of strategies which can be used
within software maintenance tasks. For example, what causes one strategy to
be selected over another, under what cases would information be externalised
and so on.

I have heard the phrase 'cognitive cost' in relation to this but I am not
quite sure where to look. I have also heard that Visser would be a good place
to start. Could anybody give me any suitable pointers?

Any information dearly appreciated.

Thanks!
