I am interested in any research which makes use of logging data or other automatically-collected data. If anyone can direct me to any literature or projects I would be very grateful. This is in connection with AESOP 'An Electronic Student Observatory Project'. AESOP is based on a system for recording , replaying and analysing user interactions in the Smalltalk programming environment, Learning Works. The Recorder writes a file of text representations of events as a student is attempting practical activities. Each event is followed a time stamp. The replayer plays back a recording at some later date so a user can observe what a student did. A set of tools are also being developed to automatically analyse the recordings in a variety of ways. AESOP is being targeted on a large scale distance learning course, Computing: An Object-oriented Approach. We are investigating how students learn to program as well as using the recorder and replayer as instructional tools.
