There was indeed much more to it than that.  If I remember correctly (it's been years now since I read this stuff) Hofstadter was actually very much interested in the perception of letter forms.  He was in a way criticizing Knuth's approach to parametrising letter forms ala Metafonts.  Still, I think this is a long way from Derek's original query.
