There were papers on XP/Pair programming in both the 2004 and 2005 EASE
conferences (Evaluation & Assessment in Software Engineering). The 2004
event was co-located as an ICSE workshop, so the proceedings are available
via IEEE, the 2005 proceedings were internal, although as usual, we
expect to produce a journal special issue from the event.

Relevant papers included:

  2004

An industrial case study on introducing XP in a complex software
  development environment, Svensson

Toward a framework for evaluating extreme programming, Williams et al

An exploratory study on the effects of pair programming, Ramesh

  2005

A preliminary study on the impact of a pair design phase on pair
  programming and solo programming, Muller

I don't think that any addressed the specific issue that you raise
though, at least, not as a direct research question, although Muller's
paper might come nearer to it than most.
