IMHO... I don't mind the loss of the "fluent" stuff.
I'm not sure about the proposed XML config stuff... If XML is required (i.e., the only way to configure the Restlets) then I'm dead set against that. If XML configuration is an option, I'm fine with that. Using @deprecated from release to release (where a deprecation only sticks around for one release after it's deprecated sounds like a very good idea to me. I'm curious to see how the application/container stuff is in practice. Hope this helps, John
