Form what I've seen at a few colleges, it comes down to the CIS/tech department and budget, as well as paranoia. with an open network their afraid f leechers, closed people may be filtered from accessing certain websites, as well as resources. my campus's wifi filters outgoing FTP access, SMTP, and just about everything but port 80.

a good solution for schools, (that I just flashed three fon AP's over to) is open-mesh, combine that with a local RADIUS server tied into the student/staff lisit, use OpenDNS o control the filtering for you, and be all set.

Do any of you have experience with Devry, specifically their now horribly bad wireless network? Apparently they used to have a good network, that is no longer the case; I'm wondering if socalfreenet ever approaches schools in an effort to provide the school with help building a good wireless network.

Thanks
Brian
