Alot of the world has no broadband, and no wired phones for dailup. Here we use a USB "edge modem." See google images: http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&source=imghp&q=edge+modem&gbv=2&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai= This is a USB stick with a SIM card in it. It works like dialup wirelessly, my typical speeds are 3KB/second. Alot of net cafe's here take that and divide it into 5-10 users. I paid $66 for the edgem modem, the SIM card, and a moth of unlimited usage. The only alternatives are satellite and wimax, both of which are typically $2000/month and only as fast as the broadband for which you'd pay $40-60/month in the states. Tekky note: the protocol is GSM/ GPRS the most common cellphone stadard in the world. -dave in kabul :)
