Thanks, guys. You diagnosed the problem Mischa. The Windows drive I was copying 
to is in fact formatted as NTFS. When I tried a FAT drive, an abbreviated test 
of what I want to copy proceeded with no problem. Just for interest, Tom, you 
might want to check and see if the PC drive you can copy to is FAT or FAT32...
