curious, haveyou tried given
<mx:PlotChart id="investment_chart" />
some height and width?  Just a long shot....

Also, I'd add some trace() in to see for sure if the data is there as
expected.
trace( '*e.result.cashflow.length is ' + **e.result.cashflow.length)
assuming its supposed to have a length. Or even
trace(**e.result.cashflow.toXMLString()); to make sure its all there
assuming XML use.
Basically verify 100% your data is coming in as expected.
