Thanks for the advice.  My co-worker who is more familiar with Java than me 
(who doesn't know it at all) helped me figure out what I was doing wrong:  I 
was specifying too much when passing the selectedItem info. I was trying to set 
the selectedItem.MA_ID, which changed the display, but didn't trip the data 
binding.  When, in the course of working through several options, I retyped it 
with just the selectedItem, it worked like a charm!

Sometimes less really is more.

Unfortunately, with the weather I don't think I'll make it to the meeting since 
I'm on a scooter in downtown. Hopefully next time!
