We built into our framework so that all calls default to "synchronous".
Obviously the calls are actual asynchronous, but we use the method Vin
suggested, but it is built into our framework so it is all automatic, but
still configurable per call if we wish. We didn't like the entire
application go gray so we also simply changed the disabled style so that the
app appearance didn't change at all and simply changed the cursor to spin
until the call comes back.

Also you can use the following

Application.application.enabled= false;

We can reset this to true either in result or fault method

I have a situation where I need to prevent the user from interacting with my
application until an asynchronous call to some business logic returns.

I was thinking of thinking of throwing up a small modal window with a
throbber to prevent the user from clicking anything.

Am I thinking about this wrong? And is there a design pattern I should be
using to handle this situation?

Thanks,
