The native mac environment is pretty good when you activate accessibility. Basically, there is no good way to automate the testing. You simply have to throw away the mouse and try to drive everything w/the keyboard. (That is how the OAST office at DHS does it as well.)
For getting at the meta data, they use Windows Inspect ( http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/dd318521(v=vs.85).aspx), which exposes all the automation attributes on the controls. Note that not all attributes of Flash objects get exposed in all window modes (IE only). (As I recall, wmode must be set to "window"; transparent or opaque does not expose the automation attributes that the 508 hooks tie into.)
