You appear to be using a Thunderbird-based mail client. Tagging is one of the features of Thunderbird promoted on http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/features.html but I can't find more info to see whether it can add text as well as colour. If not and you want it, sending in a feature request may help, or you can lead its development yourself. The gmail-using OP probably can only send in a feature request, though. Such are the limitations of using non-free software. Which reminds me: I'm currently using Heirloom mailx over IMAP for lists and patched it to display arbitrary headers (such as list-id) in the summary. I'll tidy and resubmit the patch if anyone wants it.
