Indeed. For best-of-breed now, look at sinatra, dancer and Mojolicious. Maybe Django, rails and pylons too, but they are bloated and cumbersome IMO. Ditto GWT. For the client end, there are multiple good javascript frameworks, including jQuery, which is being used in nethserver.
