As others have said this needs to be automatic or the information gathered isn't going to be anything like accurate. Even just counting installs isn't particulary accurate. How do you know if any given install is a real, lasting, one or just "lets have a look, naw don't like it" uninstall? SMOLT died. That is the sort of thing that would make the stats gathered useful.
