Hmm, that's probably inconvenient if you already have an MP3 collection on your PC. As far as I know, Ubuntu have an MP3 license for their distribution, so it should be perfectly safe to use the tools that come with Ubuntu for converting MP3 to, say, Ogg. Other distributions may have similar arrangements.
