well this is matter of money , time and will,
Question for the crocheters:
a) The crocheters wants to work on production scheme?
Than means be ready to repeat one model one and again and has no
creative fun on it. also if success it can means to be ready to
recieve orders in the level of hundreds at some time.
b) In case afirmative how much time takes to do a case manualy? and
ten , and a hundred?
c)how much wants the crocheters gain for that time ? $ o €/hour
d)crocheters must decide prodution is not fun (I totally agree) then
they can take a more design/protoyipe part of the process , then is
matter to arrange a amount per unit sold of his desings and let them
be creative , also if there is no will like, in Jay7's wife , to do
the steps from desing to production (create the designs table) they
need assistance in that case Jay7.

Quiestions for machine guys:
ok we have an investor :) that's a good thing but how much will cost
to create such a machine?
let's theroize.
I will sugest to use an already done cnc like machine as base, so
let's take makerboot Thing o matic or reprap as base. that means about
1300$
-we can use the 3d printer to do the crochet header pieces so plastic
head will not be useless.

and now the key point. develop a crochet header.... after some google
I can say most crochet machies are diferently builded as we intend[1],
but maybe investigatin more this kind of chocheter[2] we can find a
way to create the cnc head needed.
whatever is,work for a mechanical enginier, any one on the room? what
will be the cost of desing something like this? let's guess we find
one that want to spend some time on this and is a really copyleft
hardware fan and it just invoice us a 2000$ (very cheap I know but I
supposed is a fan) header for crocheting but we also want to use
diferent colors isn't it? how many, and how complicated is to change
colors? and also crochet has diferent tipes of dots isn't it? the
edges is diferent than the rest at least.
ok le'ts imagine we have all that not trivial task done now we have
the desing and create a prototipe(due we have a 3d printer, we do our
onw pieces and with some motor/electronic we make it work(about 1000$
more maybe?) due at fist we only need one of those now we have so lets
suppose we have a working machine now.
As cristopher points we need an standarized format to comunicate with
the machine, so
a)we will have to expand the machine lengauage to include whatever
chrochet instructions on there (tipe of dot an color)
b) also a more human readable format for the designers, with gui or
not, but human readable so we also need a human readable --> machine
lenguage parser.
(time or money you decide here)
so we have about a 5000$ machine that may take about 4-6 months to be
build with a full dedicated team of at least one guy, this with a
loooot of luck and surelly I have been overoptimistic.
let's say we make an arrangment with this guy in charge of building
for his work and pay him abot 5000$ for 6 month of work, yeah I know I
also supouse is another copyleft fan than will work under market price
for such task.

10000$ and 6 months to start producing(we forguet about the machine
operator), how many cases will do our crocheters with that amount of
money and time? how many cases/hour can do this machine?

so many questions we need to anwer before going on whatever direction....
