I'm adding some more ram (128 now) - most likely 256 hopefully more and killing the swap! ;)

yeah, extremely slow. and this method of installation onto CF is
pretty likely to kill your CF card within a year or so, from some
rough calculations I've done in the past (CF will only handle
300,000-500,000 writes before dying).
