http://lwn.net/Articles/409029/ and search for "Bradley Kuhn dives in
full-time at the Software Freedom Conservancy".
The SFC does for Free Software projects in USA what the Hamakor was
founded to do for Free Software projects and events in Israel.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to start forming an international network of
such organizations, so that people can donate to their Free Software
project of choice in their own country and enjoy their country's income
tax deductions/credits on their donation, even if the Free Software
project is run by a nonprofit in another country?

The organizations would offset donations from their country for other
countries' projects against donations from the other countries for their
own country's projects. And if there is any money to be actually
transferred, they'll transfer it (after making all requisite
arrangements with the relevant Income Tax authorities).
