After spending two hours on it, I have not been able to simplify our
documents and preserve the bug.
Since we have already converted our source away from the numeric ids, I am
going to let this drop.
I was not able to make a simple example, and I was not able to induce the
bug in our document by making only a few changes. It seems to be necessary
to that all or almost all of our IDs are numeric. I have no mental model for
why that would be the case, so please do not wait any further for an example
of this.
