You can certainly dual-boot. You can try this out in a VM, have a look
at 'vortexbox' (http://vortexbox.org/content/134-About-VortexBox) for a
fully configured linux image including an installed LMS.
Similar stuff exists for e.g. a Raspberry Pi. I recently set up a Pi as
a LMS server, it took ~10min (copy image to SD card e.g. with a
Windows-based tool, boot Pi, set it up in a menu-based config, done).

player as well.
