I've been struggling to find an old thread in which someone developed a brilliant proximity sensing system. I think the idea was that different cards were encoded with a key corresponding to an album. When the card was placed on/near the squeezebox, the album would start playing.
It was a very popular thread but I can't for the life of me remember what it was called.
