I'll post roughly the same thing I posted in the German subforum ;) I haven't tried it and I'm not going to. I think the price is too high for a 3.5" *resistive* touchscreen. If you factor in the cost for a Pi + DAC + PiScreen + custom case, you might as well buy a nice Android phone with a ~4.5" touchscreen. Its display will be larger, its touchscreen will be capacitive, and its screen resolution will be higher (720p).
I have two Pis myself and love them. But Android phones come fully-loaded and outsell the Pi (and accessories for it) by orders of magnitude. Recently, DACs in Android devices got much better, too. E.g., the DAC in the Moto G 8 GB (first gen) measures decently in RMAA. I do understand the appeal of small-board computers with their relatively open hardware/driver environment. However, in my mind, for the purpose of a Touch-like squeezebox client, it's not that big of a problem that a typical Android device is somewhat more locked down. The essential apps (Squeeze Player/SB Player, OrangeSqueeze, etc.) still run. Furthermore, you can open up the device a bit more by rooting. I have a B+ running picoreplayer that's connected to my AV receiver. The B+ plus all required parts did cost less than EUR 50 altogether (and it would have been even cheaper had I reused an existing microSD and PSU). Had I instead added an I2S DAC (EUR 30-50), a PiScreen (A$ 59.95 plus A$ 20 shipping), and a custom case, I would have suddenly found myself at a price point where there are a lot of other options. I am not trying to put down respectable projects like the HifiBerry or the PiScreen. If you have special requirements, they may just be a match made in heaven. I'm just saying that, depending on your needs, cheap mainstream devices may do the job as well. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ dafiend's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=60637 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102281 _______________________________________________ diy mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/diy
