Just thought I'd answer this in case anyone else ends up with the same problem. It turned out that, if you checked current draw for the whole thing, it was very briefly maxing out before dropping to around .5A. When we looked it turned out there was a short at the anode. Initially we assumed that the display had died, but it turned out that (surprisingly) the ceramic capacitor, C2, had died.
