Don't take my word for it but my understanding is that by default the
GPIO pins are on ground level so unless you activate the Pulldown-MenĂ¼s
resistors software wise, nothing happens if you connect them to ground.
If you connect them to 3.3V, otoh, you get quite a bit of current so you
probably always want to add external resistors. The advantage then is
that you don't need your software to specifically activate anything
