For simplicity, I too ended up using a pair of ready-made Behringer speakers. They are fed from the display HDMI output. The audio is acceptable, given the size of the speakers. Had to make several mods to the speakers, including cutting slots to in them to accomodate cables and fitting a 5volt psu inside the slave unit to power the Pi.
