The first thing that you read on the Django project website is this
statement:
"The web framework for perfectionists with deadlines."
I would like to build on the last word in that statement
"deadlines". Every significant project has a some sort of
deadline, it's about the only time tested method of keeping focus.
Clearly they get changed and pushed out from time to time, but they are
still there moving things along. The use of the word "deadlines"
in the Django projects credo implies that deadlines are an important
component of this project. Because deadlines are important, I would
like to propose a deadline driven development model for the Django
project itself. I envision a very simple model that would have the
following components for each release:
1.The release name: Version number and or title.
2.Release deadline date: In the format of (YYYY-MM-DD).
3.Optional feature deadline: An earlier date than the release
deadline if there are other components that rely on it to meet
the release deadline.
4.Required Features: Anything that MUST be done for this release.
5.Desired Features: It would be nice to have, but isn't required.
Here is an example entry in the "Release Deadlines" wiki page :
Release .9x, "Big Timber", Deadline (YYYY-MM-DD)
* Required Features:
- Sub classing, Feature Deadline (YYYY-MM-DD): Summary and or
Hyperlink to further resources.
- Schema evolution: Summary and or Hyperlink to further resources.
* Desired Features:
- Data loading for machines via web services or something: Summary
and or Hyperlink to further resources.
I hope that the advantages of this proposal are evident, however I
understand that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
