I'm all for the idea if it uses django.core.cache (as Adrian  
recommended).  Why not stick it in django.core.cache itself so you  
can do::

        from django.core import cache
        from django.db import models

        class MyModel(models.Model):
                ...

                objects = cache.CachedManager()

Looks nice to me...
